I cut my own hair!!

So I was brave...very...very brave. I saw the video below a couple months ago and it's been in the back of my mind since. Going to a hair salon is very hard for me. I just don't have the time and I can list a ton of ways that I could spend the money else where. My SIL used to be a hair dresser and I would have her cut my hair. But we both have little ones and trying to do something like that is really hard.

So I decided to give this a shot. And it came out great! I was so giddy, I was literally clapping and jumping up and down lol!! To know, I never have to step foot in a hair salon again...to know I don't have to wait for the stars to line up and an act of God for the perfect time for my SIL and I to get together and do this, is just amazing. I'm slowly working on doing things my own way...homemade things, and this is just one that I thought I couldn't do.

So here's the video. Please note that my hair is very similar to hers...however I think mine might be a little thicker. And it does layer your hair. I was so surprised how EVEN each layer was. I parted my hair down the middle and compared each layer to it's opposite side and it's perfect. I will say, if you try this to chop off less than you plan because you cut your bangs shorter. My hair was all one length and it stopped at the bottom of my bra strap. My bangs now go past my chin to the logo on the top right part of my shirt.  But the whole length in the back is not a big difference.

I just love it! I'm never going to the salon again! Unless of course I want a whole new look!

Pics or it didn't happen! Ha ha, that's what my kids always say to each other. But seriously, I'll bet it looks amazing, and the key is that you love it, and now you are FREEEEEeeeeeeeeeeee! You can do it for yourself now! Many many kudos to you!

I used a youtube vid to cut mine a while back. The girl on the video taught me to use a clean razor to layer my hair. It turned out really nice. :)

Have a good one, my friend! :D

Fine Frugality - I would really REALLY give it a try. Even if you just do a half an inch. It's soooo worth a try.

Let this Mind Be In You - I can't even describe the freeing feeling I feel (try saying that fast!).

As for pics...I hate taking pics! I hide from the camera so maybe next time? hehe

BlushnCheeks - if you have straight hair, similar to the lady in the video, I highly suggest you give it a try...even if it's just a little bit. I'm telling you, I decided to bite the bullet and go for it. I am so pleased i can't even put it to words.

I have been cutting my own hair for a few years now. This was great I had no idea it could be that easy to get layers. Thank you for posting.

Brave girl! My husband when we were first married cut my hair. It was kinda romantic back then.

Wohooo - me too - lol I cut my hair by faith lol Mind you I have straight hair so it's not hard - but it saves money and I colour my hair too $8 as opposed to $75 ... not bad I think :D
Enjoyed stopping by here today.

Leslie - yes it's crazy how easy it is. Just think, when you cut the pony tail, you're cutting it evenly across. But your hair is coming from different parts of your head...your bangs being the closest...which means you cut more off.

Everything I am - that is really sweet. I won't dare let my hubby come near me with scissors lol!!

Stones of remembrance...isn't it great? I'm thinking of dying my hair soon. I was thinking of going with a stronger red/auburn. If you see my pic in the About Me Page (on top of blog) you can see I have a little red in it already. But it's not bold enough. Hey - I'm home all day so it's not a big deal if I mess it up lol!

I cut my own hair too! I don't tell people though, cause they think I'm nuts and look at my like I must be a genie for being *that talented* even though I have long hair too and it's just so simple.

Heather Ann, how do you do it? I have never given cutting my own hair a thought until I saw this video!

I'm wordy, I apologize. Skip to the end for the big show stopping finish if you'd like!

Well over ten years ago I realized that every time I went to the salon I came home and cried (I was a dramatic teenager). So I thought, gosh, I can make myself cry and save some $$!

My first try was a pixie cut, it didn't come out too bad, but I got away with a lot because hair was curlier then.

SO, over the years I've had long and short and even that 'long and straight in the front and super short in the back' cut that was popular a while ago...

Here's HOW I do it: I jump off cliffs. I have watched countless hairdressers layer, cut, trim and spend 20 minutes trying to even it out. I even hacked off my bangs so that they stuck straight out once (I learned that lesson as a kid, thank goodness). So I take into account all that and go for it!

Here's my advice:
When it's long, it all looks good in a ponytail and a curling iron can cover a multitude of layering problems.
My last trim, my husband did since I love someone playing with my hair. He's a typical man when it comes to 'getting it' and with a little coaching I had him grabbing a chunk in the middle (between the hairline and the part at the top) and cutting down on the diagonal. This works with thick hair.

The BIG POINT: don't take yourself seriously. It really is just hair, and as a sahm you really can get away with murder :) Good luck!

Good for you! I don't think I want to try this though because I like my neck trimmed close and that would be difficult to reach and view and cut all at the same time.

Hi, I've been doing it a way pretty similar for over a year now, and it's easy and looks nice. I'm on the East Coast, so it usually costs $40-$60 per hair cut, so it's a huge savings every year. A few months ago I started cutting my hubby's hair, which is more of a learning experience. Luckily, it's a lot more acceptable for a guy to have an off haircut :(

Thanks Heather Ann!

Robert - LOL!!!

LMC - I have not had my hair cut in a salon since I lived in CT almost 3 years ago and it the cost was up there too. I think I spent $50 back then. And I only did it once a year because it was so expensive. So I always had split ends and breakage. Now I know I NEVER have to deal with that again. Very freeing!

Julie - Thanks for visiting.

I can't cut anything straight..especially bangs! How the woman cuts it in the video is so easy, I can't mess it up!

I don't know how I missed this post! It looks SO EASY!!! My hair is getting long and I have been thinking about going to the salon for week, but it's just not happening with a newborn baby demanding every spare minute... This is perfect! Now I have to work up the nerve to try it.
